MIDGARD – What do I need to play the game?

Lesezeit: 3 Minuten

What do I need to play the current 5th edition of MIDGARD?

It has been a while since I wrote an article about MIDGARD, Germany’s first fantasy role-playing game in English. But everything needs its time, and the time has now come. The following article provides you with all of the information that you need to play MIDGARD.

As I wrote in my earlier article (link), MIDGARD is Germany’s first fantasy-roleplaying game which was published in 1981, making it 41 years old. An honorable age, only Dungeons & Dragons (1974), Empire of the Petal Throne (1974), Traveller (1977) etc. are a bit older. Since 1981 MIDGARD has received new editions again and again and is currently in its 5th edition and exclusively available in German. Germany’s first fantasy role-playing game is good, and it would be a shame not to write about it in English. Are you ready? Alright, let start!

MIDGARD: “Der Kodex” – The Core Rulebook.

To play MIDGARD, two books are important for you: “Der Kodex” (The Codex) is the core rulebook and contains everything you need to create a character and all the necessary game rules. Questions like “What do I need to play?” or “How to make skills or abilities checks?” etc., are answered. In addition, you will find short information about the world as well as a small Bestiary. The Core Rulebook is a hardcover, counts 210 pages and is printed in color. If you would buy “Der Kodex” additionally, you would get access to a HASH code, with which you can download the PDF version in the publisher’s online store for free.

MIDGARD: “Das Arkanum” – The Magic Rulebook.

„The Arcanum“ contains the magic rules and is required if you or a player want to play a magical talented character. This picture shows the front cover of the current 5th edition.

The second rulebook you need is “Das Arkanum” (The Arcanum). In short, it is the magic rulebook and contains all game rules as well as spells to play a magical talented character in MIDGARD. So, besides the core rulebook, you require this book as well. The Arcanum is also a hardcover, counts 210 pages and is printed in color.  It is the same procedure as with the Codex: With the purchase of the Magic Rulebook, you get access to a HASH code, with which you can download the PDF version for free in the publisher’s online store.

With the two books mentioned above, you have everything you need to play Germany’s first fantasy role-playing game and it guarantees you a lot of fun in a wonderful magical fantasy world.

What comes next?

You have now received an overview of MIDGARD and its rulebooks, “The Codex” as well as “The Arcanum”. In the upcoming article I will tell you about the Bestiary. I hope you enjoyed this article and if you have any questions, please leave a comment.
